Dynamic Relationships in Postural Control for School Based Practice

Children with sensory and motor challenges experience difficulties with postural control which impact their ability to organize their bodies in space. As such, postural control forms the foundation for participation in school but creates a barrier for children with challenges. However previous models of postural control were based on our knowledge at the time but their information and application in both motor and sensory realms are incomplete based on current research and knowledge. 
This one-day webinar is an exploration of dynamic systems theory as the basis for a contemporary paradigm for postural control. We will discuss this model, emphasizing an expanded number of components and the dynamic relationships between components, along with practical information on the clinical application to assessment and treatment of postural control in children with sensory and motor challenges in a school environment.
     
 
Learning objectives.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define postural control and list 3 reasons it is considered foundational for motor skill development. 
  2. Identify 10 components of a contemporary model of postural control.
  3. Relate the dynamic connections between these components. 
  4. Compare and contrast the current postural control literature for children with different diagnoses. 
  5. Discuss appropriate assessment strategies for different postural control components that can be implemented in the school environment.
  6. Illustrate appropriate treatment strategies for children with differing postural control challenges that address issues in the components discussed in the school environment.
